IT IS SAD TO SAY THAT THE LONNIES SIGN IS NO LONGER IN CHINATOWN. THE NOODLE SHOP WENT UNDER AND THE NEW OWNERS DECIDED TO DO AWAY WITH IT! IT IS SAD TO SEE A PIECE OF OLD CHINATOWN DISSAPEAR!

ReplyDeleteI am not sure who you have been speaking to, but the current owners of PHO 21 which now occupies the space where Lonnie's used to be has nothing to do with the Lonnie's sign. The Lee and Wing family own the sign, and it is being kept safe and sound until a suitable and deserving location is determined by the families.

We lived at 18 Mott St. My father owned the pool hall at 14 Mott St.
I'm so glad that sign is being preserved! I'll be watching this blog in the hopes that one day I'll be able to walk into a Lonnie's Coffee Shop. I live in Syracuse, NY, my real name is Lonnie and I married David Chu. We also have an uncle Raymond Chu! So although I am not, myself, of Chinese descent, my husband is. I'm known in Syracuse as a bit of nut for good coffee, and my husband and I have a food blog, chusonchow.com. I also blog to keep our own neighborhood walkable, which means trying to keep the past alive so people know exactly where they are. When these signs disappear, some of our built history goes with them. Then we could be in Peoria or East Ashtabula and wouldn't know the difference.
